Field Equipment Open Thread

Hi All,

So, I'm sitting here with Sohini discussing transcription software and equipment and we thought we'd dust off this old cohort page and put it to use:

Open thread on data analysis and transcription software, field equipment (e.g. cameras, digital recorders), water purification tablets, etc. etc. What are you packing for the field? We invite friends who have been to the field and back or who are otherwise occupied with similar topics to weigh-in too!

SLR Cameras/lenses?
Transcription pedals
Quality Netbooks for research assistants?
Portable Scanners?

For those who were not privy to previous conversations with Kendra and Sohini, we CAN circumvent websites that require a US IP address via the Brown VPN. That means we will all hopefully be watching next season's Community when they take an anthropology course together.

I suppose that also means Pop Culture Seminar could continue as a form of online/distance learning ;)

Via Katie Rhine: Livescribe Smartpen!

Haven't tested it myself yet, but it promises to sync your own notes with your interviews as you take them, and then convert your notes directly into searchable pdf files, linked to the synced audio files! The pen/recorder is little more than a decent digital recorder, and the notebooks are a bit more than moleskines, while the time and money saved on transcription could be huge. I promise that if I ever see any actual grant money I'll post a full report, but in the meantime you can see what I'm talking about here:

Back when I was originally budgeting for my grant apps, Harris Solomon recommended the Devon ThinkPro Office system for organizing data.

Rather than using data analysis software like NVivo -- which for many of us MAC users is off the table anyway -- Harris suggested that the character recognition system was particularly useful for those of us who do a lot of scanning foreign newspaper articles, organizational pamphlets, etc. etc.

In addition to the software, Harris recommended the portable ScanSnap scanner.

Recs on transcription software? Cocoa, while having many talents, is not transcribing my interviews with the alacrity and accuracy with which I hoped. Otherwise, I will do it ye olde fashioned way.

Also, Betty White is playing the anthro professor on Community.

People still reading this?

For Andrea: I used LiveScribe for easier transcription. It runs in the background of your word processing program while still responding to whatever keyboard commands you set for slowing playback, jumping back a few seconds etc.

For others: Travel Towel recommendations?? I hate the microfiber rubbery ones and am looking for one that is still quick drying but feels like an actual towel. Maybe the Tek??

I hit Louisville's Quest Outdoors yesterday to order some Capilene long underwear and wool socks (ack!), and I checked out their travel towels.

Stacey, the one they carry is the Aquis Microfiber towel, which has really high reviews on Amazon, and comes in a variety of sizes.

Also, I have been meaning to ask you (Stacey) what US Postal workers carry to ward of scary dogs. After living in fear of the roving packs of dogs in La Paz and El Alto for so many years, I wanted to see if there are any whistles or sprays out there that might provide a little defense...

Pepper spray! Oh, the good old days.

I also saw part of a Dog Whisperer episode where he was explaining to some mail carriers how to avoid aggressive dogs, but I don't actually remember the advice he gave. So, I suppose that's not really helpful.
